Thatch: How to Tell If You Have It and What to Do About It

Thatch is the layer of living and dead stems, roots and runners that sits between the green canopy and the soil. A thin layer is genuinely useful: it cushions traffic, moderates soil temperature and holds a little moisture. A thick layer is a problem, and the difference between the two is about a quarter of an inch.

Measuring it properly

Do not guess from the surface. Cut a small wedge out of the lawn with a spade, about three inches deep and three inches across, and look at the profile from the side. Between the green blades and the darker soil you will see a brown, fibrous, slightly spongy band. That band is the thatch.

Under half an inch is healthy and needs no action. Half to three-quarters of an inch is worth watching. Over three-quarters of an inch is where problems start, and over an inch usually explains a whole set of symptoms that were being blamed on something else.

Take the sample from two or three places. Thatch is rarely even across a lawn, and the worst area is often the one that gets the most water.

What thick thatch does

A thick layer behaves like a sponge sitting on top of the soil. Water and fertiliser stop where they land instead of reaching the root zone, so the lawn looks thirsty despite being watered and unfed despite being fed. Roots begin growing into the thatch layer rather than the soil, which leaves the lawn far less drought-tolerant, because thatch dries out much faster than soil.

It also makes a lawn feel springy underfoot and causes the mower to scalp, because the deck rides on a compressible surface that gives way under the wheels.

Why it builds up

Thatch accumulates when it is produced faster than soil organisms break it down. The usual causes are over-fertilising with nitrogen, over-watering, compacted soil with poor biological activity, and aggressive spreading grasses that simply produce a lot of runner material. Bermuda and zoysia build thatch readily; that is a characteristic of the grass, not a fault in the lawn.

Grass clippings, contrary to a very persistent myth, are not a significant cause. Clippings are mostly water and break down within days.

Dethatching

A thatching rake has curved, knife-like tines designed to cut down into the layer and pull material up. It is hard physical work and deliberately destructive — the lawn will look terrible immediately afterwards and needs to be growing strongly to recover.

Work in one direction across the area, rake up and remove the debris, then go over it again at an angle if the layer was heavy. Expect a surprising volume of material; a moderately thatched lawn can produce several full bags from a small area.

Time it for early autumn or late spring while warm-season grass is actively growing. Never in the middle of summer heat, and never while dormant.

Aeration as the gentler option

Core aeration removes plugs of soil and thatch, opening channels for air, water and soil organisms. It is far less brutal than dethatching, and for a layer in the half to three-quarter inch range it is usually the better answer — it addresses the cause, which is compaction and poor biological breakdown, rather than only the symptom.

Leave the plugs on the surface to break down. They look untidy for a week and return useful soil and organisms to the canopy.

Preventing it coming back

  • Feed at label rates, not generously. Excess nitrogen is the biggest single driver.
  • Water deeply and less often rather than lightly and daily.
  • Aerate annually on heavy or compacted soil.
  • Keep the mower blade sharp and mow regularly, so you remove less at a time.
  • Check the profile once a season rather than waiting for symptoms.

After dethatching

Water it in, and consider topdressing lightly to fill the surface and encourage recovery. Do not fertilise heavily to force it back — that is how the layer built up in the first place. Give it three or four weeks of normal growth and it will close over.

Telling thatch from compaction

Both produce a lawn that stays wet at the surface, drains slowly and thins out, so it is worth distinguishing them before choosing a tool. Push a screwdriver into moist soil: if it goes in easily for six inches, compaction is not your main problem and the spongy layer is thatch. If it stops after two or three inches against firm ground, you have compaction, and dethatching will not fix it.

Many lawns have both, which is why core aeration followed by light topdressing is such a common recommendation — it addresses the compacted layer and adds soil that helps break the thatch down biologically.

What to do with the debris

A dethatched lawn produces a remarkable volume of material, and it is worth planning where it goes before you start. It composts well if mixed with green material, but on its own it is slow and can mat. Bagging it is usually the practical answer for anything beyond a small area.

Rake it up the same day rather than leaving it on the lawn overnight. A thick layer of loose thatch left in place will smother the grass underneath it, which rather defeats the purpose of removing it in the first place.
